Description: An antique Victorian hard stone cameo and seed pearl ring in 14k & 18k yellow gold. The cameo measures 19 x 15 mm and the goddess Flora is expertly hand carved from 3 layers of banded agate, known as black and white onyx. Surrounding the cameo are 18) 3.0mm seed pearls. The ring is assembled from an older piece of jewelry (most likely a pin/pendant) as the frame has been soft soldered onto the ring setting. This has all been expertly done and is only noticeable when inspecting the under gallery with a 10x loupe. Unmarked but tests 14k on the setting. The top portion of the ring with the frame that the cameo and seed pearls are set in appears to be a brighter yellow and most likely 18k but unable to accurately test that area. Circa 188's for cameo & pearl frame, mid. 1900's for ring setting.
Flora, in Roman mythology was the goddess of flowers and the season of spring. She was a relatively minor figure in Roman mythology, as there were several more important fertility goddesses, but her association with the spring gave her particular importance at the coming of springtime. Her festival, the Floralia, was held in April or early May and symbolized the renewal of the cycle of life, celebrating by dancing, drinking, and flowers. Her Greek equivalent was Chloris.
